Project three:
Social Impact Poster
This project follows the United Nations sustainability goal 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns. The target audience is college students encountering the poster in the Penn State Collaborative Commons. At Penn State, fast fashion is sweeping the campus. Students are eager to fill their drawers with the newest trends for the cheapest prices because college students typically do not have a lot of free income.
This project aims to call out the behavior with the phrase “stop fast fast fashion.” The stand-out element is that this project is made out of all thrifted t-shirts in my color scheme of oranges and browns and the type is shaped in a way that builds a mound of waste. On top of the letters is a pile of scraps, which clarifies that it is making a pile of waste. All of the letters are frayed and the thread sewing them to the poster is falling apart to make a play on fast fashion items being cheaply made and therefore falling apart.
Project Requirements: Create a 24 x 36-inch poster that utilizes handmade text. and promotes advocacy for a UN SDG.
It is all in the details.
To the left are a few detail shots, which show the wear of the letters, thread, and the waste pile details (this includes the actual t-shirt tags). All of the letters are hand-distressed and sewn.
